I always tell travellers: embrace the contrasts. Eat fresh sushi for breakfast at a local market, wander through quiet backstreets, then end your day with skyline views from a rooftop bar.

Kyoto is where the heart of traditional Japan beats strongest. It’s a city of temples, tea houses, geisha districts and tranquil gardens that feel almost suspended in time. Some of my favourite memories are early mornings at Fushimi Inari before the crowds arrive, or watching cherry blossoms drift like confetti across the Philosopher’s Path. Kyoto encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply and appreciate beauty in its purest form.

Bangkok is vibrant, chaotic, delicious and utterly unforgettable. The city is alive with tuk-tuks whizzing past golden temples, street-food stalls serving dishes bursting with flavour, and markets selling everything from silks to spices. Yet there’s calm to be found too – rooftop pools overlooking the Chao Phraya River, peaceful temples, or long-tail boat rides through the quieter canals. It’s the perfect gateway to the wider Far East, whether you’re heading to Thailand’s islands or beyond to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Learn a Few Local Phrases
A simple “Konnichiwa,” “Sawadee,” or “Xin chào” goes a long way. Even in big cities, locals genuinely appreciate the effort, and it can open doors to warmer interactions and more authentic moments.
